OUR TAKE

It was only a matter of time before Second Spectrum made the jump from the NBA to the WNBA. While the partnership will certainly have a pivotal role in strategic planning and analysis for teams, it will be interesting to see if the WNBA plans to use Second Spectrum to improve the fan experience. Second Spectrum’s work with the NBA has included enhancing alternate telecasts with advanced stats and graphics for the most rabid of basketball fans. With a growing fan base in the WNBA, Second Spectrum can help the league capture the interest of the most analytically-minded fans.

Source Summary

Genius Sports’ Second Spectrum has partnered with the WNBA to become the league’s official augmentation and analytics provider. Using courtside cameras, Second Spectrum gathers real-time player and ball-tracking data to give teams live access to player stats like shot quality, shooter impact, paint touches, and more. Second Spectrum will launch alongside the regular season on May 14th. It will be the first of its kind in a women’s professional sports league and has been met with praise from WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
