How Gamers are Changing College Football Recruiting

Aug 13, 2025 | Sport

Our Take

In the new world of NIL, schools will do whatever it takes to gain an edge, and that includes partnering with athletes’ favorite streamers. Visibility from influential channels can boost a school’s profile, attracting recruits, increasing donor contributions, and raising public notoriety. Seems like a no-brainer right?

But take a step back and it’s a strange concept—especially in light of the professionalization of e-sports (something we predicted in our Future of Sports 1.0 report). In essence, it’s a “professional athlete” endorsing and being signed to a school they’ve never actually played for. Imagine LeBron James signing with the University of Kentucky to “endorse” their basketball program.

As strange of a concept as it may be, the influence of streaming is undeniable. This is likely just the tip of the iceberg in how schools will partner with changemakers in that space.

Source Summary

After years of lawsuits forced the NCAA Football games into dormancy, NIL deals gave EA the green light to revive the beloved franchise. Now with College Football 26 released, it’s not just players reaping the financial benefits but some gamers too. Schools have begun partnering with YouTubers as a way to promote their programs, offering them recruitment-style deals to feature their teams in videos. Schools are betting on the idea that attention from popular gamers can translate into real-world support and recruiting power.
