A “Sweet” Solution for Sustainable Packaging

Aug 7, 2025 | Food

Our Take

BeetKraft offers a rare combination of ecological and operational advantages. Where many new innovations face challenges with product quality, costs, and market integration, BeetKraft stands apart. The packaging is upcycled from locally-sourced sugar beet pulp, a by-product of Südzucker AG’s regular sugar operation. It’s already produced in high quantities that are readily available. Its eco-friendly nature and material qualities make for easy consumer adoption and are likely to stand out on the shelf.

Source Summary

The world’s largest sugar producer, Südzucker AG, is tapping into the paper and packaging market with a newly developed fiber made from sugar beet pulp. Known as BeetKraft, the fiber is a byproduct of its sugar production capable of replacing up to 40% of the traditionally used wood-based pulps in paper and cardboard manufacturing. As a result, products are generally lighter, and most importantly more sustainable, without compromising durability or strength.
