DoorDash App Adds SNAP

DoorDash joins Instacart in allowing SNAP recipients to use their EBT credit for grocery delivery. The food delivery service claims the update will impact “more than 2.3 million people” who are in areas defined as food deserts, and is hoping to further reduce the barriers to access fresh groceries. In recent years, the term “food desert” has become outdated. Most research has shown that food deserts are not as much a determinant of food insecurity as once thought. This raises the question about whether the DoorDash (and Instacart) SNAP EBT update will be used more for convenience than necessity. Nonetheless, increasing convenient grocery access for SNAP participants is a welcome step.
